What a great experience having Blue as our chef! Aside from the fact that he made delicious food, he was so much fun and so engaging! We loved having him here to celebrate our friend's BIG birthday!

Parking, stairs & setup

Idyllwild is about two hours from our base — up the 243 from Banning or the 74 from Hemet — and past the free 50 miles, so a travel fee applies and is shown upfront in your quote. The village sits at about 5,400 feet: evenings are cool even in July and cold from October on, so book an earlier start than you would down the hill and put the cabin's deck heater or firepit to work for the rest of the night. In winter the roads can call for chains and the deck or driveway spot needs to be cleared of snow before the chef arrives; we watch the forecast and talk to you the day before.

We cook on propane, not wood or charcoal, and we keep the grill on hardscape clear of trees and brush — the mountain's fire rules are real and we treat them that way, and on a red-flag day we will tell you straight if the setup spot has to move. Cabin driveways are steep and narrow and cell service is patchy, so send the map pin, the gate or lockbox details, and where the chef can park. The chef brings the grill, the food, and everything for the show, and takes it all away — your cabin's kitchen never opens.

Not sure your space works? Send a photo with your quote request and we will confirm the setup spot before your date.

Staying in a rental? Four quick checks
  • Outdoor cooking: cabin rentals almost always allow a propane grill on the deck or driveway — a quick note to the host settles it. We cook on propane, never wood or charcoal.
  • Quiet hours: Riverside County's rental rules go quiet at 10pm and cap guest counts. A 5 or 5:30pm start wraps the show in daylight and inside them.
  • The spot: a level 6x8 ft area with about 10 ft of clearance — deck or driveway pad, cleared of snow in winter. Low deck roofs and deep eaves are the usual reason we shift a few feet.
  • Finding you: steep driveways and patchy cell service — send the map pin, the lockbox details, and where to park. Everything leaves with the chef; the cabin's kitchen never opens.
What we actually buy

Beef: USDA Choice Angus top sirloin. Choice is the grade above Select. We buy Angus program beef rather than whatever is cheapest that week.

Shrimp: BAP-certified. Best Aquaculture Practices — an independent certification covering the farm, the hatchery, the feed and the processing plant.

Salmon: Atlantic salmon fillet, skinless. Portioned fillet, not trim or belly offcuts.

Chicken: Boneless, skinless breast. Hatched, raised and harvested in the USA. Breast meat only — no thigh substitution.

Lobster tail: Wild-caught Caribbean spiny lobster. Our premium upgrade. Wild-caught, not farmed.

Sauces: Terry Ho’s yum yum sauce and Japanese ginger dressing. The ones you already recognise from the restaurant. Both contain egg.

Allergies: Our standard soy sauce is not gluten free, so a gluten-free guest should have their own gluten-free soy and teriyaki on hand and we'll cook their portion with it. We can't promise a nut- or sesame-free table — the sauces and gyoza are commercial products, the gyoza contain sesame, and one sauce is made in a plant that also handles peanuts. Tell us the allergy when you book and we'll check the labels in use for your date.

Popular Idyllwild parties

Cabin Birthday Weekends. The milestone birthday where a dozen friends rent a lodge for two nights. Hibachi night is the one meal nobody has to plan, shop for, or clean up after.

Bachelorette & Friends' Getaways. A cabin with a hot tub, a chef show at dusk, and the whole group in one place — dinner, entertainment, and the photos handled in one booking.

Family Reunions Under the Pines. Three generations in one big cabin and a dinner that keeps the kids at the table — the egg toss and the onion volcano do most of that work.

Fall Color & Holiday Cabins. October through New Year's is when the mountain fills up. A Thanksgiving-weekend or Christmas-week dinner with a show, and no one stuck in the kitchen.

See how each celebration plays out: birthdays, pool parties, family reunions and more party ideas.

Where we set up in Idyllwild

A-Frames & Cabin Decks. The classic Idyllwild rental. The grill sets up on the deck or the driveway pad — any level 6x8 ft spot with clearance above it — and the show plays to the railing.

Lodges Sleeping Twelve to Twenty. The larger properties in Fern Valley and Pine Cove with wraparound decks and a firepit that already expect a crowd.

Mountain Center & Garner Valley Ranches. Open yards and horse properties down the hill from the village, where the party is outside by design.

Why Idyllwild hosts book us

Idyllwild is a mile-high village of cabins rented by the weekend — birthday groups up from LA and Orange County, bachelorette parties from San Diego, three generations in one lodge for Thanksgiving. There are a handful of restaurants in the village and they fill up on a Saturday night, and nobody came up the hill to cook for twelve. A private hibachi chef turns one of those nights into the dinner everyone plans the weekend around: the grill on the deck, the fire show under the pines, and the cabin's kitchen never opened.

We come to Idyllwild, Fern Valley, Pine Cove, Mountain Center, and Garner Valley. Same published price as everywhere else — $59.90 per adult, $29.90 per child 5–12, kids under 5 eat free, $599 event minimum — and the travel fee for the drive up the mountain is calculated from your address and shown in your quote before you pay anything.

Idyllwild hibachi FAQ

Do you come up to Idyllwild?

Yes — we come to Idyllwild, Fern Valley, Pine Cove, Mountain Center, and Garner Valley. It is past our free 50-mile radius, so a travel fee applies at $1 per additional mile, calculated from your address and shown in your instant quote.

Can you cook on a cabin deck?

Yes, if it is level, gives us about 6x8 ft, and has roughly 10 ft of clearance above the grill — a low deck roof is the one thing that makes us move to the driveway pad instead. We cook on propane and keep the grill clear of railings, trees, and brush.

What does hibachi at an Idyllwild cabin cost?

$59.90 per adult, $29.90 per child 5–12, kids under 5 eat free, with a $599 event minimum — chef, grill, food, live show, setup, and cleanup included — plus the travel fee shown in your quote. Monday–Thursday parties get the $54.90/adult Weekday Special, any party size.

Is it too cold up the mountain for an outdoor dinner?

The cooking is outdoors; the eating does not have to be. Book a late-afternoon start so the show lands at dusk, put the cabin's heater or firepit to work, and if the night turns cold the plates simply come inside while the chef finishes on the deck.

How much space do you need in Idyllwild?

About a 6x8 ft flat area for the grill plus roughly 10 ft of overhead clearance, in open air — a patio, deck, driveway, or yard all work. Enclosed rooms and covered balconies do not. Send a photo when you book and we'll confirm the setup spot before your date.

Is this an indoor or outdoor party?

The cooking is outdoors; the eating does not have to be. A live teppanyaki grill throws real smoke and grease and will set off a smoke alarm indoors, so the grill always stays outside — on a patio, deck, driveway, yard, or roof terrace, with about 10 ft of overhead clearance. Your guests can absolutely sit and eat inside. Plenty of Idyllwild parties run exactly that way: the chef cooks on the patio and plates come indoors, which is what we'd suggest on a hot afternoon or a cold night.

Can we book a lunch or daytime slot?

Yes. Because the party is outdoors, the right answer depends on your city and the season — midday stays comfortable near the coast for most of the year, while inland and Valley cities are best at lunch roughly October through May and better at sunset in high summer. Daytime slots are usually easier to get than weekend evenings. Tell us your date and preferred time and we'll tell you honestly whether it works.

What happens if we need to cancel or reschedule?

Cancel or reschedule at least 72 hours before your event at no cost. Inside 72 hours we may not be able to refund in full. If rain is the problem, a 10'x10' pop-up tent over the chef's station usually saves the party — you provide the tent, we do not supply them — and guests can eat indoors while the chef cooks outside.
