“Chef John was our personal chef and he was sooooo much fun. I highly recommend requesting for him because aside from the delicious food, there was so much laughing because of him. 5 stars for the service, 5 stars for the food, 5 stars for Chef John! Definitely will do this again!”

La Jolla details
Parking, stairs & setup
The coast is the mildest weather we serve, with two things to plan around. The marine layer — May Gray and June Gloom — makes late-spring evenings cool and damp; a late-afternoon start gets the cooking done in the warm part of the day. And the onshore breeze picks up most afternoons, so a patio with a little shelter is better than an open rooftop for the show. La Jolla is past our free 50-mile radius from our base, so a travel fee applies and is shown upfront in your quote.
Parking in the Shores and along the boardwalk is tight in summer; tell us where the chef can unload close to the setup spot. The chef brings the grill, the food, and everything for the show, and takes all of it away — your rental's kitchen stays closed and the deck looks the way you found it.
Not sure your space works? Send a photo with your quote request and we will confirm the setup spot before your date.
What we actually buy
Beef: USDA Choice Angus top sirloin. Choice is the grade above Select. We buy Angus program beef rather than whatever is cheapest that week.
Shrimp: BAP-certified. Best Aquaculture Practices — an independent certification covering the farm, the hatchery, the feed and the processing plant.
Salmon: Atlantic salmon fillet, skinless. Portioned fillet, not trim or belly offcuts.
Chicken: Boneless, skinless breast. Hatched, raised and harvested in the USA. Breast meat only — no thigh substitution.
Lobster tail: Wild-caught Caribbean spiny lobster. Our premium upgrade. Wild-caught, not farmed.
Sauces: Terry Ho’s yum yum sauce and Japanese ginger dressing. The ones you already recognise from the restaurant. Both contain egg.
Allergies: Our standard soy sauce is not gluten free, so a gluten-free guest should have their own gluten-free soy and teriyaki on hand and we'll cook their portion with it. We can't promise a nut- or sesame-free table — the sauces and gyoza are commercial products, the gyoza contain sesame, and one sauce is made in a plant that also handles peanuts. Tell us the allergy when you book and we'll check the labels in use for your date.
Popular La Jolla parties
Beach-House Family Weeks. The week-long rental with grandparents, cousins, and one very small kitchen. Hibachi night is the meal the group photo comes from.
Bachelorette Beach Weekends. Beach by day, chef on the deck at sunset, nobody drives to the Gaslamp. Dinner and the entertainment in one booking.
Milestone Birthdays on the Deck. The 40th or 60th at a rental with an ocean view — the fire show against the sunset is the whole pitch.
UCSD Graduation Dinners. June weekends when every restaurant near campus is booked solid and the family flew in anyway. We cook at the rental.
See how each celebration plays out: birthdays, pool parties, family reunions and more party ideas.
Where we set up in La Jolla
Shores & Bird Rock Beach Rentals. Patios and small yards a block from the sand. The grill sets up on the patio; the ocean breeze is the only thing we plan around.
Hillside Homes with Ocean Decks. Muirlands and Mount Soledad houses with view decks. We need one level 6x8 ft spot with clearance above it — most decks have it.
Pacific & Mission Beach Vacation Rentals. The rental strip along the boardwalk — rooftop decks and courtyards built for a crowd.
Why La Jolla hosts book us
La Jolla is the beach-house end of San Diego: Shores rentals a block from the sand, Bird Rock decks over the water, and hillside homes where the whole family stays for a week. A private hibachi chef is the night nobody has to book a table for twelve in the Village — the grill on the deck, the fire show as the marine layer rolls in, and the kitchen untouched.
We come to La Jolla, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Del Mar, and Encinitas. $59.90 per adult, $29.90 per child 5–12, kids under 5 eat free, $599 event minimum, with any travel fee calculated from your address and shown in your quote before you pay.
La Jolla hibachi FAQ
Do you come to La Jolla and Del Mar?
Yes — we come to La Jolla, La Jolla Shores, Bird Rock, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Del Mar, and Encinitas. The coast is past our free 50 miles, so a travel fee applies at $1 per additional mile, calculated from your address and shown in your instant quote.
Can you cook at our beach rental?
Yes, on patios, decks, and courtyards — we need a level spot about 6x8 ft with roughly 10 ft of clearance above the grill. A spot with a little shelter from the afternoon breeze is ideal.
What does hibachi at a La Jolla rental cost?
$59.90 per adult, $29.90 per child 5–12, kids under 5 eat free, with a $599 event minimum — chef, grill, food, live show, setup, and cleanup included — plus any travel fee shown in your quote. Monday–Thursday parties with 15+ guests get the $45.90/adult Weekday Special.
What about June Gloom?
Book a late-afternoon start in May and June so the cooking happens while it is still warm, and the fire show lands as the light goes. The rest of the year, sunset on the coast is the best slot we have.
How much space do you need in La Jolla?
About a 6x8 ft flat area for the grill plus roughly 10 ft of overhead clearance, in open air — a patio, deck, driveway, or yard all work. Enclosed rooms and covered balconies do not. Send a photo when you book and we'll confirm the setup spot before your date.
Is this an indoor or outdoor party?
The cooking is outdoors; the eating does not have to be. A live teppanyaki grill throws real smoke and grease and will set off a smoke alarm indoors, so the grill always stays outside — on a patio, deck, driveway, yard, or roof terrace, with about 10 ft of overhead clearance. Your guests can absolutely sit and eat inside. Plenty of La Jolla parties run exactly that way: the chef cooks on the patio and plates come indoors, which is what we'd suggest on a hot afternoon or a cold night.
Can we book a lunch or daytime slot?
Yes. Because the party is outdoors, the right answer depends on your city and the season — midday stays comfortable near the coast for most of the year, while inland and Valley cities are best at lunch roughly October through May and better at sunset in high summer. Daytime slots are usually easier to get than weekend evenings. Tell us your date and preferred time and we'll tell you honestly whether it works.
What happens if we need to cancel or reschedule?
Cancel or reschedule at least 72 hours before your event and your $19.90 deposit is refunded in full. Inside 72 hours the deposit may become non-refundable. If rain is the problem, a 10'x10' pop-up tent over the chef's station usually saves the party — you provide the tent, we do not supply them — and guests can eat indoors while the chef cooks outside.
